Silvio Berlusconi gets 7 years in underage sex case

Milan, Italy (CNN) -- A panel of judges  Monday sentenced (v, tuyên án) former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi to seven years in prison for abusing power (lạm dụng quyền lực) and having sex with an underage prostitute (gái mại dâm vị thành niên).
Judges also barred (ngăn cấm) the flamboyant  (lòe loẹt) former prime minister from holding public office (nắm giữ các chức vụ công).
The high-profile case centered on an exotic(adj, kỳ lạ) dancer  nicknamed "Ruby the heart-stealer."(Ruby, kẻ cắp trái tim)
Berlusconi's attorney (Luật sư, người thụ lý) told reporters he plans to appeal the conviction (kháng cáo bản án). He said he was not surprised by the verdict (Lời tuyên án), because the former prime minister had not gotten a fair trial.Berlusconi's 'bunga bunga' problem What's next for Italian politics? "What happened today is very serious," defense attorney (Luật sư bão chữa) Nicolo Ghedini said, arguing that judges had not appropriately  (adv, thích đáng)considered court proceedings. (lập luận rằng các quan tòa đã không xem xét thích đáng thủ tục tố tụng)
Prosecutors (công tố viên) had argued that Berlusconi had sex 13 times with underage dancer Karima el Mahroug and abused his position when he intervened  (can thiệp, xen vào) in May 2010 to get her released from jail (nhà tù), where she was being held on charges (sự buộc tội) of theft.

Berlusconi, 76, has denied the charges and others against him.
"It is absurd  /əb'sə:dto suggest (thật là vô lý để đề nghị rằng...) I have paid for a rapport with a woman (trả tiền cho một mối quan hệ với PN). It is something I have never done, not even once in my life (thậm chí là chưa 1 lần trong đời). It is something I find degrading (adj) to my dignity (giảm nhân phẩm của tôi)," he has said.
El Mahroug has said that she never had sex with Berlusconi and that she lied to him about her age, telling him she was 24.
The underage sex trial verdict is the latest in a string of legal troubles (chuổi rắc rối về pháp luật) the former prime minister has faced.
Last month, an Italian appeals court (phiên tòa phúc thẩm _ xét xử lại) in Milan upheld  (thay đổi đột ngột) a four-year prison sentence for Berlusconi, who was convicted of tax evasion /i'veiʤn/ (trốn thuế) by a lower court last October.
In that sentence, he was barred from public office for five years.
Berlusconi, who served on and off as prime minister between 1994 and 2011, is arguably one of the most colorful and controversial  (gây tranh cãi) figures in the lively history of Italian politics. For years, he has been entangled in (bị vướng vào) fraud (gian lận), corruption and sex scandals that have often reached Italian courts.
Berlusconi Fast Facts
In a 389-page document presented to a court in 2011, prosecutors alleged  Berlusconi paid el Mahroug and scores of other young women (hàng chục gái tơ) for taking part in "bunga bunga parties" at his private residence (dinh thự).
Using what they say are phone interceptions  (ngăn chặn, nghe lén) of the young women as evidence (bằng chứng), prosecutors said the women performed strip-teases  (thoát y vũ) and erotic  (khiêu dâm)actions in exchange for money and gifts. Berlusconi says the parties were normal dinner gatherings where no one misbehaved (v,ăn ở bậy bạ, cư xử thiếu đứng đắn).
Berlusconi denied the charges and accused prosecutors of conspiring  (mưu hại, âm mưu) against him in a left-wing (cánh tả)  plot (âm mưu). "Communism  (chủ nghĩa cộng sản) never changes in Italy. There are still people who use the penal code (bộ luật hình sự) as a weapon in their ideological battles (cuộc chiến tư tưởng) ," he said last year.
Undaunted (không nản lòng), Berlusconi has not only launched an appeal (đưa ra sự kháng cáo), but in December made two significant announcements: his engagement  (sự đính hôn) to 27-year-old Francesca Pascale, and then, his political comeback.
In Italy's February elections, the three-time prime minister appealed to Italian voters (kêu gọi cử tri Ý) by denouncing  (tố cáo) the unpopular austerity policies (chính sách thắt lưng buộc bụng) of technocrat  (chế độ kỹ trị) Mario Monti.
For all his critics (nhà phê bình), Berlusconi won almost 30% of the vote in February and remains an influential figure (nhân vật có ảnh hưởng, có thế lực) in Prime Minister Enrico Letta's fragile (mong manh) coalition government (chính phủ liên minh).
